Smith chose a career in government service, moving to Washington's D.C. at age twenty-two. Nonetheless, he also became a popular performer and prolific songwriter, amassing over 250 titles (some of them published under his own name). Further, Smith's “Listen to my Tale of Woe” was a popular song throughout the 1880s and 1890s. Throughout his government service, he was stationed in Turkey, Japan, and China.
